Beginner’s green smoothie

When I first started eating raw, I honestly didn’t understand green smoothies. I was told my everyone not to combine fruits and vegetables, so I didn’t see how you can make green smoothies with fruit. It was only last year that I learnt that leafy greens, such as spinach, lettuce etc, combine well with any foods.

I’ve tried green smoothies made by other people, but they never sat well in my stomach. They had such a wide variety of fruits and greens mixed in (think pineapple and melon together!), that it wasn’t combined well and caused havoc in my tummy.

I began researching why green smoothies are good for you, and it made sense to me, so I wanted to try making one myself. My motto this year was so simply all my recipes, and THAT is what made green smoothies possible for me.

So my number one rule is: SIMPLY YOUR RECIPE – don’t feel like you need to add 10 different greens into your smoothie to make it worth drinking. Your body will have a much easier time digesting it if it’s just a handful of ingredients.

Serves: 2

Ingredients for a beginners green smoothie:

  • 2 bananas
  • 2 large handfuls of spinach
  • 1 small handful of mint
  • 2 cups water

How to make the green smoothie:

Just blend all of the ingredients in a high speed blender (I recommend a Vitamix or a Blendtec) and that’s it!

This is a very easy recipe, it sits well with most people and it’s light and fruity enough for even those who dislike the taste of greens to drink it. The mint is optional, but it does give a nice freshness to the smoothie – great for the summer!

You can of course play around with different fruits, ratios and water quantity to make it just right for you. Remember to blend it well, no one likes a chunky smoothie.

Try this delicious drink for breakfast or anytime you’re feeling peckish, I’m sure you will love it!
