Connect With Nature Through Healthy Living

Nature deficit disorder is a genuine phenomenon affecting people, particularly children. It refers to the notion that our drastically reduced outdoor time is impacting our ability to connect with nature, and consequently, our health, well-being, spirit, and even survival.

The pattern is familiar, we transition from one screen to another, whether it’s our phones, TVs, or computers, cycling through them all day long. By the end of the day, we’re exhausted yet find ourselves unwinding in front of another screen, further disconnecting from nature. 

However, it’s not fair to blame technology alone. Access to nature isn’t universal or inclusive, and various cultural, socio-economic, and political factors also contribute to this issue. Here are ways to connect with nature.

Connect With Nature Wherever You Are

Nature surrounds us everywhere. It could be in a garden, a local park, a nearby beach, or in the open countryside. Community gardens or courtyards exist even in urban areas where nature might seem scarce. 

Watch for the unexpected, whether it’s an urban fox on your early morning commute, weather shifts, or birdsong sound outside your window. Try to observe nature wherever you are, in a way that resonates with you.

Get Some Plants

Bringing nature closer to you is best achieved by surrounding yourself with real plants, particularly indoors. Plants bring a piece of nature inside, providing aesthetic appeal and a green touch to your interior.

Engaging in home gardening and tending to plants offers benefits as well. Taking care of a living organism gives us purpose, feels rewarding, and can combat feelings of loneliness and depression. You can experience the positive effects of olive oil from the olive plant. This is a great way to connect with nature and incorporate healthy living simultaneously.

Invite Nature Into Your Space

Accessing natural spaces can sometimes be challenging due to your location, hectic schedule, safety concerns, or health issues. Why not invite nature into your home instead? Adding plants indoors provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy greenery’s sight, touch, and fragrance, starting with supermarket herb pots is an excellent idea.

Consider maximizing these spaces for those with an allotment, garden, or balcony. Cultivate plants, flowers, or vegetables, set up a bird feeder, and immerse yourself in the surrounding sights and sounds.

Gardening may not be your preferred activity. You can still connect with nature through stories, art, and sound recordings. Watching nature-themed films or TV shows is another fantastic way to feel close to and reflect on the natural world.

Cycle

Cycling, whether for commuting or leisure, offers a wonderful opportunity to appreciate nature while staying active. During pleasant weather, aim to include biking in your daily travel routine. If the distance is far, consider replacing part of the journey with cycling.

Opt for biking to the store instead of driving and swap indoor activities for biking in your spare time. Exploring on a bike will also enhance your familiarity with the area, allowing you to uncover new locations and connect with the community and environment.

Protect Nature

Caring for something can be a wonderful way to boost your mood, and what better to nurture than nature? Nature is incredibly remarkable, try to protect nature through your decisions and actions. This could be as easy as recycling, walking instead of driving, or participating in local conservation or clean-up efforts. Looking after nature can give you a sense of contribution and enhance your overall positivity.
