The inspiration for this post came from a trip I took to the Gili Islands, Indonesia not too long ago. I was sitting on the pier, waiting for the boat that would take us from Bali to the Lombok islands, and there was a couple sitting next to me eating mangosteen. The poor tourists had a little pocket knife that they were sticking into the mangosteen, trying to cut it open, mashing the yummy bit inside and making a right mess all over the place. They offered me one, and I offered to show them how to open it the Balinese way (I was shown this by my first landlord when I moved to Bali) and they were shocked at how simple it is.
